Who should get a colonoscopy and how often?

All persons 50 years of age and older are encouraged to schedule a colonoscopy to screen for colon cancer, regardless of overall health, according to Mayo Clinic. A precautionary screening is also recommended every 10 years thereafter or sooner.
The procedure is commonly performed on patients experiencing symptoms of abdominal pain, chronic constipation, chronic diarrhea, rectal bleeding and other intestinal problems, cites Mayo Clinic. Individuals with a history of abnormal growths along the lining of the large intestine -known as polyps- should also undergo regular screening. A positive result often requires additional testing and involves more frequent, rigorous screening in the future.
