If computer virtual memory is too low, increase the size of the paging file. This is easily done through My Computer on a Windows 2000 or XP machine.
Please note that by increasing the size of the paging file, users may notice that Microsoft Office may not run correctly, and in some cases, may not start at all. To increase the size of the paging file on a Windows 2000 machine, perform the following steps.
- Open My Computer
- Click Advanced
- Go to the Virtual Memory option
- Click Set
- Restart the computer
- Exit and restart
Open My Computer and click Properties.
On the Properties screen, click Advanced. Then go into Performance Options.
Click Virtual Memory and then Change. Increase the size of the paging file and note that Windows 2000 needs a value of at least 126 MB to run properly.
After changing the settings, click Set and then OK.
A box will appear that says, "The changes you have made require you to restart your computer before they can take effect." Click OK.
Click OK in the Performance Options box and again in the System Properties box. Restart the computer.
To increase the size of the paging file in Windows XP, follow the first two steps as listed above. From there, perform the following steps.
- Click Settings
- Go to Virtual Memory
- Click OK
Click Settings in the Performance Window and go to the Performance Options. Click Advanced.
Click Change in the Virtual Memory Pane. Change the Initial Size to a larger value and click Set.
Click OK to set the value.
