When should I cut back my fuschia?

Fuchsia plants should be cut back in the early spring, as soon as the danger of frost is passed, according to the American Fuchsia Society. Gardeners who live in frost-free areas can prune the plants during the winter.
Fuchsias should be trimmed of all dead wood and any weak or thin branches. Strong branches should be cut back so that only two or three sets of dormant buds remain, according to the American Fuchsia Society. Gardeners can also trim extra branches throughout the growing season to create a plant with a distinct shape and more flowers. In addition to pruning, fuchsias benefit from pinching back new shoots that appear early in the growing season before the plant blooms.
