Should dogs eat ice cubes?

Feeding ice cubes to dogs is fine, as long as there is no chewing or choking hazard involved. The ice cubes can be given as a treat or put in a water bowl. Freezing toys and treats in ice for dogs to chew later is also harmless.
In 2010, an online story stated an owner fed a dog ice water and it later went into distress. A veterinary surgeon later told the pet owner that the ice water caused the violent stomach spasms and bloating. However, the information provided in the story was false, according to Dr. Tina Wismer of the Animal Poison Control Center. Dr. Wismer explained bloating is caused by various factors, but not by ice water.
