Persons with diabetes can drink a moderate amount of alcohol, according to the American Diabetes Association. Guidelines recommend no more than one drink a day for women and no more than two drinks daily for men.
Diabetics are advised to avoid drinking when blood glucose is low, explains the American Diabetes Association. It is especially important for those on insulin or diabetes pills such as sulfonylureas and meglitinides -which lower blood glucose- to avoid consuming alcohol on an empty stomach. Persons with diabetes are encouraged to stay hydrated with a zero calorie beverage such as water, diet soda or iced tea.
