Should you floss before or after brushing your teeth?

It does not matter whether a person flosses before or after she brushes her teeth, as either order is acceptable, according to HowStuffWorks. However, flossing before brushing the teeth ensures that the spaces between the teeth are clean, allowing for greater penetration and coverage by the toothpaste's fluoride.
Flossing is just as important as brushing, as it removes pieces of food stuck between the teeth and gums, even in places that a toothbrush does not reach, explains HowStuffWorks. In doing so, it prevents the formation of bacteria, which can build up to plaque and tartar and ultimately cause gum disease.
