Proper brushing is vital to having healthy teeth. Dental health professionals recommend brushing twice a day to remove plaque that causes gum disease and tooth decay. Follow these steps to brush your teeth in two minutes using a toothbrush and toothpaste.
- Place toothpaste on the brush
People 2 years of age and older should place a pea-sized amount of fluoride-containing toothpaste onto the bristles of the toothbrush. Parents should use only water to brush the teeth of children younger than two years old.
- Gently scrub the teeth
Hold the toothbrush using the thumb and forefinger in a pen grip. This prevents excessive pressure being applied which can cause the gums to recede and expose the roots of the teeth. Gently scrub the teeth using short, horizontal strokes for one to two minutes. Parents should perform this action for their children until children develop the motor skills to effectively brush their own teeth around age 7.
- Spit out toothpaste
Spit any residual toothpaste into the sink. Do not rinse the teeth, as this dilutes the effects of the fluoride. Rinse the toothbrush, and store it in a clean place. Repeat this activity at bedtime each day and one other time during the day.
