Properly brush your teeth by applying a strip of toothpaste to a pre-moistened toothbrush, positioning your brush head at a 45-degree angle to the gums, brushing in short strokes, brushing all tooth surfaces and brushing the tongue. Brush for two minutes at a time. Brush twice a day, and floss regularly.
- Apply a strip of toothpaste to a moistened toothbrush
Choose a toothbrush with soft or extra-soft bristles. Make sure the head of the brush fits comfortably in your mouth. Both manual and electric toothbrushes are acceptable.
- Position the brush head
Position the brush head at a 45-degree angle to the gums. This position helps prevent gum abrasions and undue irritation.
- Use proper strokes
Use gentle pressure when brushing, and brush with short up-and-down or circular strokes. To prevent gum injuries, avoid brushing in a side-to-side manner.
- Brush all tooth surfaces
Brush the outer surfaces, inner surfaces and chewing surfaces of the teeth. Spend at least 30 seconds on each quadrant of your mouth. Use a timer if necessary.
- Brush the surface of the tongue
Brush the surface of the tongue to remove bacteria and eliminate bad breath.
- Finish with floss
Floss your teeth once per day. Flossing removes bacteria and plaque.
