Should kids drink Gatorade?

In general, children should hydrate with water rather than Gatorade or other sports drinks. They don't need the sugar and electrolytes these drinks contain unless they have been continuously engaged in strenuous activity for more than 50 minutes or have a pre-existing carbohydrate or mineral deficiency.
Gatorade is designed to replenish water and electrolytes lost through physical activity, but pediatricians have expressed concern about the large amount of sugar content, the unneeded dyes and flavorings. The average child does not exercise enough to require more carbohydrates and minerals than would be provided by a bottle of water and a piece of fruit.
