When should roses be pruned?

Most roses should be pruned in the spring, although an area's climate is the most important indicator of when to prune, according to rose supplier Heirloom Roses. Pruning should be done once the area is no longer in danger of a hard frost and after new growth appears.

Fall pruning is recommended for some varieties, such as hybrid tea roses and climbing roses. Canes that are thinner than a pencil are pruned to prevent them from damaging sturdier canes during windy weather. Roses are deadheaded in the summer to promote extra blooms. They are also moderately trimmed to maintain shape.
