When should you spay kittens?

Kittens can be spayed or neutered at the age of 2 months, or when they weigh 2 pounds. While some veterinarians wait until the animal is 6 months old, the American Veterinary Medical Association has endorsed the practice of spaying or neutering at 2 months old.
The average age at which pets are spayed or neutered is 4 months. Animals are placed under anesthesia before the procedure so that they feel no pain. A cat or dog that has undergone surgery with anesthesia needs 18 to 24 hours to recover completely. Due to the after-effects of anesthesia, an animal may be more prone to snapping or nipping and should be kept away from children and other pets.
