What is the Shudras' main role in life?

Encyclopedia.com describes the Shudras as rural laborers whose purpose is to serve the higher-ranking Indian varnas. While the Shudras are the lowest-ranked of the four traditional varnas, they are considered to be higher in rank than the Untouchables or Panchamas.

The Shudra varna historically did not have the privilege of wearing the sacred Hindu thread. Still, they typically have had the ability to enter Hindu temples for worship, unlike the Untouchables. Several hundred million members of the Indian population are Shudras. In modern times, they have become self-employed farmers, and many Shudras have found other occupations within the modern economy.
