What are the side effects of Suboxone?

Some of the side effects of Suboxone, which is a brand name of a drug that contains buprenorphine, include weakness, constipation, headaches and confusion. Suboxone is a drug that is composed of naloxone and buprenorphine. Buprenorphine is an opiate, and when combined with naloxone, creates a narcotic that helps to reverse the aftereffects of other narcotic drugs.

Common side effects of Suboxone can include:

• Weakness and drowsiness
• Swelling in the extremities, such as the arms and legs
• Increased sweating
• Insomnia
• Headaches and body aches
• Constipation, vomiting or nausea
• Numbing or reddening of the inside of the mouth

Severe side effects of Suboxone can be experienced and if any of these occur, the individual needs to go to the hospital immediately. These can include:

• Common withdrawal symptoms, including flu-like symptoms of fever, chills, diarrhea, watery eyes, runny nose, vomiting, muscle pain and feeling hot or cold
• Light-headedness, as if fainting
• Nausea, stomach pain and appetite loss
• Blurred vision, confusion and slurred speech
• Jaundice of the skin or eyes
• Extreme weakness, drowsiness and weak or shallow breathing

Certain things dictate whether it is safe to take Suboxone, and these things need to be revealed to the doctor when being treated:

• Liver or kidney disease
• Urination issues
• Spine curvatures that affect breathing
• Gallbladder, thyroid or adrenal gland problems
• History of drug abuse, alcohol abuse or mental illnesses
• Tumors or head injuries
