According to WebMD, most users of Retinol do experience varying skin reactions. Common side effects include skin redness, irritation, dryness, peeling and flaking. Retinol often causes sun sensitivity, skin color changes, tingling and itchiness. Some severe skin reactions such as blistering and burning may also occur.

Retinol cream is typically used to treat skin issues such as acne and wrinkles. Many of these side effects can be reduced by using Retinol as directed by a doctor and applying skin moisturizer daily during use. Long-term Retinol use can cause thinning of the skin. Use of Retinol during pregnancy also has been shown to increase the risk of birth defects.
