How can I sift flour if I don't have a sifter?

To sift flour without a sifter, pour the measured flour into a fine mesh strainer, and shake the strainer gently until all the flour falls through. If the flour still appears densely packed, use a whisk or fork to further aerate it.

  1. Prepare the work area

Gather a mixing bowl, a fine mesh strainer, flour and a fork or whisk. Place the strainer over the mixing bowl.

  2. Sift the flour with the strainer

Pour the flour into the strainer, leaving about 1 inch of space. Gently shake the flour until all of it has passed through the strainer.

  3. Finish aerating the flour

Use a fork or whisk to remove any lumps that remain in the flour.
