Signs and symptoms of oral cancer or cancer of the jaw are sores that don't heal, lumps, pain, swelling, numbness or tingling, moving teeth, and difficulty swallowing, according to Mayo Clinic. The biggest risk factor for the development of oral cancer is tobacco use.
Other risk factors include alcohol consumption, sun exposure to lips, and exposure to a sexually transmitted virus called human papillomavirus, or HPV. The best ways to reduce risk for developing oral or jaw cancer are stopping tobacco use or never starting, moderating alcohol consumption, avoiding excessive sun exposure to the mouth and lips, and seeing a dentist regularly, notes Mayo Clinic.
