What are signs of muscular dystrophy?

According to the Mayo Clinic, the main sign and symptom of muscular dystrophy is progressive muscle weakness. Duchenne muscular dystrophy and Becker muscular dystrophy are the two main types of the disease, and both present with different early symptoms.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy accounts for approximately 50 percent of all muscular dystrophy cases. People with this type experience frequent falls, difficulty getting up from a seated position, trouble running, waddling gait and large calf muscles, states the Mayo Clinic. Patients with Becker muscular dystrophy present with similar symptoms, but they usually are slower progressing and do not appear in patients until their mid-20s or later.
