Silent acid reflux is the result when the contents of the stomach back up and stomach acid reaches the pharynx or larynx, states WebMD. The sphincter works to keep stomach contents out of the throat. In the case of silent acid reflux, the sphincter does not work properly.
The disease is called silent acid reflux because it may not have the same symptoms as standard acid reflux, such as a burning sensation in the lower chest, claims WebMD. Adult symptoms of silent acid reflux include excessive throat clearing, persistent coughs and lumps in the throat. Traditional symptoms such as a burning sensation or bitter taste may be present, as well as other symptoms like trouble breathing and swallowing.
