What is severe acid reflux?

Severe acid reflux is when food and acid from the stomach are forced back up the esophagus after eating by a burp, according to WebMD. Severe acid reflux could be a sign of gastrophageal reflux disease.

Acid reflux and heart burn are common. A sore throat, cough, asthma symptoms and laryngitis can result from recurring acid reflux. WebMD states that chronic severe acid reflux can result in permanent damage and cancer of the esophagus. Over-the-counter acid blockers such as Axid, Pepcid, Tagament and Zantac can help severe acid reflux. These products help decrease the amount of stomach acid that is produced.
