How do you get silky, smooth hair?

Hair treatments that restore moisture and strength, as well as changes to the regular hair care routine, help turn dry, damaged hair into silky, smooth tresses. Excessive heat styling, harsh winter weather and even hard water can damage hair, making it brittle and unhealthy.

Silky hair is strong and rich in healthy oils that nourish the hair.

1. Change hair products
Switch to shampoos and conditioners that are sulfate-free. Many hair care products provide intense hair therapy to restore damaged hair to silky condition. Check stores for products labeled "sulfate-free," "intense therapy," "dry hair repair" or "conditioning mask."
2. Apply hair masks
Apply a hair mask treatment to the hair at least once weekly. Use a store-bought product or make a blend at home with ingredients such as egg yolks, mayonnaise, avocado, honey and bananas. Rinse hair after 30 minutes.
3. Apply hot oil treatments
Apply hot oil treatment once weekly. Wait 1 hour or overnight before rinsing. Oils such as olive, almond, coconut, argan and jojoba oil repair, strengthen and protect hair.
4. Perform a vinegar rinse
Mix apple cider vinegar with equal parts water, pour over wet hair and rinse after 10 minutes. Apply once weekly to clarify and condition hair.
5. Improve the water quality
Install a water softener or wash hair with distilled water if the water is hard and makes the hair dry and brittle. Wash with tepid water instead of hot water.
6. Use styling tools
Apply a heat styling product before blow drying or using hot irons. Detangle hair with a comb instead of a brush, and use styling tools with heat protector plates. It also helps to skip the heat and give the hair a break occasionally.
