The Sistine Chapel is in Vatican City, a sovereign state located inside Rome, Italy. Erected between 1473 and 1481, the Sistine Chapel hosts a series of impressive frescoes by Michelangelo, Perugino, Botticelli and other artists.
Because of these frescoes, the Sistine Chapel is a major destination for tourists to Italy. The chapel is the last stop on a tour of the Vatican Museums. In addition to being a museum, the chapel is also a functioning religious site of the Roman Catholic Church. Most importantly, it hosts the papal conclaves in which the College of Cardinals elects a new pope when the need arises.
