What is the size of a dire wolf?

The dire wolf was about 6 feet 6 inches long and lived from the Pleistocene epoch until about 10,000 years ago. Dire wolves are famous not just for being featured on "Game of Thrones," but because over 2,000 have been excavated from the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles.
The dire wolf looked much like the wolf of today but bigger and heavier. It probably scavenged more than it hunted, which was one of the reasons why so many got caught in the tar pits. When prey got trapped in the pits, the dire wolf went in after it, only to be trapped itself.
