What size pots are useful for tree planting?

Some types of trees thrive when grown in pots, and the ideal size of tree's pot depends on the plant's root system, according to HGTV. Pot sizes can range from 10 inches in diameter to 18 inches in diameter and larger.
In addition to being the right size, the pot should have adequate drainage holes for the tree. Dwarf fruit trees are a good choice for growing in a pot, as Better Homes and Gardens advises. Likewise, Japanese maples and olive trees also grow well in pots. Home gardeners with limited space should consider growing trees in pots rather than in the ground.
