What is skimming on RFID credit cards?

By Forinfos - 06/11/2025 - 0 comments

RFID skimming refers to a form of digital theft whereby the information contained on an RFID-equipped credit card is intercepted and duplicated. This can be accomplished through a device called an RFID skimmer, which analyzes wireless data transmissions and derives information, such as card numbers and expiration dates, from them.

In 2006, a team of researchers from Massachusetts was the first to build a device that could skim data from RFID cards. The team used $150 worth of electronics to create the device. However, its effectiveness was accounted for by the lack of security protection featured by the first-generation models of RFID cards. Modern RFID cards encrypt the data and transmit dummy numbers as a means of protection.
