What are slab pots?

Traditionally, slab pots are ceramic pieces that are constructed by hand using rolled clay that is cut into geometric shapes and joined at right angles to create the walls. Slip, or watered down clay, is used to hold the sides together, and a coiled rope of clay reinforces the structure.
The other type of slab potting uses soft slabs and "slump or hump" molds. In the slump method, the clay is laid inside the mold. In the hump mold method, the clay is draped over the mold. A variety of substances make good draping molds, including wood, plaster or upholstery foam. When soft clay slab dries, it has the consistency and appearance of leather.
