What is a post-tensioned slab?

A post-tensioned slab is a slab of concrete that has been stressed with tendons of steel wires that are spliced through the center of the slab. After the concrete has cured, the stretched wires impose approximately 33,000 pounds of load on the slab.

The compression involved with creating post-tensioned slabs allows the creation of must thinner slabs than other methods. A typical post-tensioned slab is approximately 8 inches thick.

Once tension is complete, the steel wires are removed from the slab. Grout is applied to the holes left by the wires to discourage corrosion. Post-tensioned slabs are praised for their fire resistance, sound control and reduced quantities of materials required for a job.
