The world's slowest growing plant is the Puya raimondii. This rare bromeliad species was discovered in the Bolivian mountains in 1870. It takes approximately 80 to 150 years to flower, and it dies soon after blooming.
The Puya raimondii is a spherical bush consisting of long, outward-pointing leaves. A rough-skinned, green structure emerges from the top when it is ready to bloom. The structure, once fully grown, produces thousands of white flowers. Because of its slow growth rate, Puya raimondii are extremely rare. One of the few Puya raimondii in existence is kept at the University of California's Botanical Garden.
