Smith & Hawken garden stores ceased operations in 2009. Initially, the owner intended to sell the chain of 56 stores. However, he was unable to find a buyer and was forced to close the shops instead.

Smith & Hawken stores were managed by parent company Scotts Miracle-Gro Co. before the chain's closing. Flagging sales from a weak economy and a lack of scale were the primary reasons for the brand's failure. The 30-year-old business' closure left approximately 700 workers without a job.

Smith & Hawken was formed in 1979 to provide garden tools, lawn-care items and consumer gardening products. It was a leader in its industry with socially responsible business practices and quality items for organic gardeners.
