What is sodium hydrochloride?

Sodium hydrochloride, also referred to as sodium hypochloride, is a compound that is often used in water purification processes. Its chemical symbol is NaOCl.

Sodium hydrochloride may be used in some industries for bleaching, odor removal and water disinfection. It is a yellowish solution that can be produced by dissolving salt in softened water or by adding chlorine gas to caustic soda.

People who are exposed to sodium hydrochloride for long periods of time may suffer from a sore throat, stomach pains and vomiting. However, in correct concentrations, such as when it is used in a swimming pool, sodium hypochlorite is generally harmless.
