A solitaire ring is a diamond solitaire engagement ring consisting of one outstanding diamond. Introduced in 1886, it is still a very popular engagement ring style.
The showcased diamond may be any style of cut, color or shape, with the most common being the round, brilliant-cut diamond, in either a four-prong or six-prong setting. Princess-cut, marquis, heart-shaped, teardrop, oval and emerald-cut diamonds are also commonly used in solitaire rings. A simple, solid gold wedding band (yellow or white) would typically accompany a solitaire ring. One benefit of choosing this simple setting is that it reduces the cost of the ring, enabling the buyer to obtain a better diamond.
