What are solutions in science?

In science, particularly in the field of chemistry, solutions are defined as homogeneous mixtures characterized by a uniform consistency throughout the substance. Solutions, which occur at the molecular level, are composed of solutes that are completely dissolved in a solvent. Common solutions include atmospheric air, tap water, beverages, metal alloys, water vapor, salt water, sugar water, orange juice, coffee, dental filling and solder.

Solutes and solvents can either be in solid, liquid or gaseous particles. The solvent constitutes the larger portion in a solution. The quantity of solute present in a solvent can be measured using three different methods: mass percent, volume percent and mass/volume percent.
