As of 2015, there is no evidence that suggests that the song "He Stopped Loving Her Today" was based on a true story. The writers, however, wrote the song during one of George Jones' lowest points.
The melancholic song was written by Curly Putnam and Bobby Braddock. Although George Jones’ producer Billy Sherrill wanted to put the song on the country star's newest record, George Jones did not like the song when he first heard it. Sources speculate that Jones was hesitant to record that song because he was dealing with a difficult period and did not want to record a melancholic country song.
