What sounds do beavers make?

Beavers use a combination of grunts, barks and tail slaps to communicate with one another. At times, they even make sounds similar to that of a human baby cooing or crying.

Baby beavers, called kits, make sounds to get the attention of other beavers, especially when they want attention. Adult beavers slap the water with their tails to alert other beavers to danger. Beavers are North America's largest rodent, and as such, have few natural predators. However, they are sometimes eaten by owls, hawks, coyotes and red foxes.

Beavers can be found living throughout North America — except for Southern California, Nevada and Florida. They are active year round and are mostly nocturnal.
