Foxes make a series of high-pitched barks or yips. During the mating season, foxes also produce a screechy high-pitched scream.
All fox species produce a range of vocalizations to communicate with each other. Red foxes, which are present around the world, mostly use a series of barks or yips. The sequence of yips a fox uses are thought to be an identification, similar to a name, used by that particular fox. Females use a high-pitched shriek to attract males during mating season. Other calls are used less and may not usually be heard by people. The most unusual being a guttural chatter interspersed with yips and howls that is used by foxes in confrontations over territory.
