When was South Carolina founded?

The state of South Carolina officially became a state on May 23, 1788. The area was originally settled by English colonists in 1670. It was the eighth state to accept the United States constitution.

The capital city of South Carolina is Columbia. The state's nickname is Palmetto State. It is located on the Eastern coast of the United States. North Carolina is to the north, Georgia is to the south and west, and its east coast touches the Atlantic Ocean.

South Carolina was the first colony to declare independence from Great Britain in the American Revolution. The state also was the first to secede from the Union prior to the Civil War.
