Who founded North Carolina?

The British founded two colonies in North Carolina in the 1850s, but both failed. It was later settled by permanent Virginia settlers, and again became part of a British-founded colony named Carolina.
The first town built in North Carolina was Bath, in 1705. It is commonly believed that North Carolina was the first of the states declaring independence from Great Britain. It became the 12th state of the Union after the end of the American Revolution. The state officially seceded from the Union in 1861, when it became a Confederate state, though it was brought back into the Union in 1868.
