The Republican speaker of the North Carolina House Thom Tillis won the North Carolina election in 2014. He defeated the Democratic candidate, Senator Kay Hagan.
Tillis won the North Carolina election narrowly, with 48.82 percent of the votes. The second candidate, Kay Hagan, obtained 47.26 percent of the votes. According to ballot counts, 1,423,259 of the voters voted for Tillis with only 1,377,651 giving their vote to Hagan. During the campaign, Tillis was criticized for supporting budget cuts in the state's education department, slashing job benefits and opposing Medicaid expansion. His opponent, a first-time Democratic senator, is a supporter of the Affordable Care Act.
