Does spandex shrink?

Spandex is a synthetic fiber that generally does not shrink. However, when blended with other fabrics such as cotton, linen, rayon and tencel, there is a potential for shrinkage. For example, spandex blended with polyester tends to shrink, especially when exposed to high heat.
Spandex has been incorporated in a wide range of garments and clothing articles because of its elasticity, strength and comfortable fit. Spandex is capable of being stretched over 600% before ripping. Spandex was created in 1959 by the DuPont Company. There are several brand names used for spandex including Lycra, Elaspan and Acepora. In fact, Lycra is the most common name for spandex outside the United States.
