What is "SPD"?

SPD is a sensory processing disorder that occurs when sensory signals do not get organized into appropriate responses. SPD can affect one sense or a combination of the senses. People with SPD typically over-respond or under-respond to stimuli, notes the Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation.

The Sensory Processing Disorder Foundation explains that SPD is thought to be a genetic disease. As of October 2014, additional research is necessary to determine the exact cause of SPD. SPD is diagnosed in children more often than adults, and some children are misdiagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. A doctor typically prescribes occupation therapy to treat the disease, teaching patients how to process and respond to stimuli.
