The Heisman Trophy is presented to the outstanding college football player who combines great ability with diligence, perseverance and hard work. The award is named after John Heisman, a former player and coach who founded the National Football Coaches Association and sought to organize a vote of the top player.

The award has been presented annually since 1935, and the first winner was Jay Berwanger. As of 2015, Archie Griffin (Ohio State, 1974 and 1975) was the only two-time winner in history. Past winners include NFL Hall of Famers Roger Staubach (Navy, 1963), Tony Dorsett (Pittsburgh, 1976), Marcus Allen (USC, 1981) and Barry Sanders (Oklahoma State, 1988).
