According to ESPN, the fastest player to ever run the 40-yard dash, the commonly accepted way of measuring a football player's speed, was Chris Johnson's 4.24-second dash he recorded in 2008. The NFL began recording 40-yard dash speeds in 1999.

After setting the record, Johnson was drafted in the first round by the Tennessee Titans with the 24th overall pick. In 2014, former Kent State running back Dri Archer threatened Johnson's record by running 40 yards in 4.26 seconds. Other NFL legends such as Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders have reportedly run faster times, but this was before the NFL made the 40-yard dash an official draft statistic.
