Is using lead in cannonball molds safe?

Using lead to make cannonball fishing weights is safe if the user follows some basic precautions. The potential risk for lead poisoning is not only to the person who works directly with the lead, but also to pregnant women and children through second-hand contamination.
Lead enters the body through breathing or accidental ingestion. To work safely with lead, avoid handling food, drinks or cigarettes while making or handling cannonballs or other lead fishing weights. Don't touch the mouth or face while working with lead.
Change clothing and shower after handling lead. Launder exposed clothing separately from family laundry, as lead is more toxic for children and fetuses than for it is adults. Use and store the lead and cannonball-making paraphernalia away from common living spaces.
