The first tennis court in the United States was built in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1876. The game quickly became popular, and cities provided opportunities for residents to play the game. A tennis court was built in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1880, while the open fields in New York's Central Park were used to play the game during the 1880s.
While tennis has been played in some form for thousands of years, rules and equipment for the modern game were invented in Britain in 1874. The first Wimbledon tournament was held in 1877, and the game quickly spread throughout the world to countries such as India and Russia.
