What are springtail bugs?

Springtails are tiny, jumping insects that live mainly in moist soils. They vary in color, but most are purplish or dark gray. Springtails are wingless, but they have a tail-like appendage known as the furcula, which enables them to jump several inches high when disturbed.

Springtails feed on decaying organic matter and are harmless to humans. They are commonly found in moist outdoor environments such as flowerbeds, lawns, gardens and swimming pools. During dry periods, springtails sometimes migrate in large numbers to moist indoor areas such as sinks, bathtubs and potted plants. They can be controlled by drying out and removing excess organic matter from infested areas.
