The St. Louis Gateway Arch is 630 feet tall and 630 wide at the ground level between the outer edges of its legs. It weighs 17,246 tons, and it is made of steel and concrete. The St. Louis Gateway Arch is part of the National Jefferson Expansion Memorial.
Construction of the St. Louis Gateway Arch began on February 12, 1963, and it finished on October 28, 1965. Trams began running up the arch in July 1967, starting with the north tram. The south tram began running in May 1968.
The trams go up the arch every 5 minutes. The St. Louis Gateway Arch has 1,076 steps, which, as of 2015, are only used for maintenance and emergencies.
