What is the standard form in algebra?

The standard form is one of two methods used to solve an algebraic linear equation. It exists in the form ax + by = c, where a and b are coefficients and x and y are parts of an ordered pair.

The line of a standard-form equation can be found by substituting 0 for x and y in turn, which provides the values of the y-intercept and x-intercept of the line. Plotting those two points on a graph allows them to be connected as a line and the line to be extended indefinitely. Many people prefer the slope-intercept form of y = mx + b, but many equations start in standard form.
