Some standard newsletter layouts include no fold, book style, letter fold and gatefold versions. Designs account for the size and folds required to create a desired finished product. Mailers are a particular category of several standard layouts with address information printed on one outside panel.
A no fold newsletter includes simple layouts and minimal information on one or both sides of a single sheet of 8 1/2 by-11 inch paper.
A book style or half-fold newsletter incorporates a crease from the top to the bottom in the center of the sheet, resulting in four pages from 8 1/2 by 11-inch or 11 by 17-inch stock. The layout has an inside and an outside.
A letter fold or tri-fold design allows 8 1/2 by 11-inch sheets to fit into a standard number 10 envelope for direct mailings. Each panel is a different size, with the front larger to accommodate the other panels. Letter-fold templates create a six-page newsletter from 8 1/2 by 11-inch stock, whereas a large-format tri-fold design uses 11 by 17-inch stock for a larger version of the same product.
A combination design includes a book style and letter style folds, allowing a larger sheet to fit into a number 10 envelope.
A gatefold newsletter is similar to a book style except the sides meet in the center of the page. A closed gatefold adds another vertical crease in the middle, narrowing the finished product. Gatefold layouts enable the use of larger images spread across multiple panels.
