"The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven" stars Alex Malarkey, the young boy who co-wrote the book upon which the film is based, playing himself. The cast also includes Alex's parents, Kevin and Beth, and his brother, Aaron, all of whom play themselves in the 2010 docudrama-style TV movie.

Five years after its publication, the movie's source material met controversy when Alex admitted that his near-death experience -- involving a glorious trip to heaven following a devastating automobile accident -- was a complete fabrication.
