Do all US states have a lieutenant governor?
By Forinfos - 25/11/2025 - 0 comments
As of 2015, 45 of the 50 states have an Office of Lieutenant Governor. In three of the remaining states the Secretary of State serves as first in line of succession to the Office of Governor, while in two other states the senate president serves in that capacity.
In 26 states, a political party's candidates for governor and lieutenant governor run together as a team in the general election, while in 17 states candidates for governor and lieutenant governor run for election independent of one another, as of 2015. In Tennessee and West Virginia, lieutenant governors are not elected. Rather, in those two states the senate president automatically assumes the position of lieutenant governor.
