Nepal's government is a federal democratic republic. This newest form of government replaces the previous monarchy, which Parliament voted to remove in 2007.
The current head of state, or president, is Dr. Ram Baran Yadav, and the vice president is Parmanand Jha. In late 1990, King Birendra declared a new constitution and introduced Nepal to a multiparty parliamentary democracy. In 2006, King Gyanendra relinquished his duties and reinstated Parliament. The following year, Parliament voted to become a federal democratic republic, doing away with its monarchy in the process. In 2008, the Constituent Assembly voted to get rid of the monarchy, completing the transition to a republic.
